Hi Legoktm, Thanks for your work on the POTY 2021. It's a great part of Wikipedia so I appreciate you keeping it going. Glennfcowan (talk) 03:10, 16 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

+1 Thanks so much for taking this on! The Picture of the Year Contest is a highlight for all photographers who participate in Featured Pictures. I'm tremendously thankful for you organizing it this year. Best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 17:42, 21 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Legoktm: It just popped up at Special:PageTranslation. Do you want to be marked for translation? I am asking because I do not feel it is ready yet. So much of redlinks. ─ The Aafī (talk) 20:13, 9 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@TheAafi: thanks for asking. No, not yet, I will do so once I test it with this year's voting gadget in the next few days. Legoktm (talk) 00:03, 11 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
ohh okay, please let me know in case you need my assistance. ─ The Aafī (talk) 00:06, 11 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the ...

At Wikicon, Lego and I briefly talked about the possibility of a larger POTY-like event commemorating 20 years of Commons next year -- something which perhaps draws on a wider range of images than just FPs and/or which is limited to just contributions by Commons contributors. I mentioned the monthly photo challenge and quality images as two possible pools of photos that are both broader than FP and limited to user creations, but I'm sure there are other possibilities, too. Figured I'd ping a few people here who I think might be interested either because they enjoy thinking outside the box when it comes to FPC or because of their involvement with the monthly challenge. @W.carter, Frank Schulenburg, Aristeas, Ikan Kekek, Colin, and Jarekt: . — Rhododendrites talk14:23, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I think we should add "this year's photo challenge winners" to the list of choices for every POTY. They (Commons:Photo challenge#previous) really are a great set of photos. There would only be 72 entries, if we assume two challenges in a month and picking the 1st, 2nd and 3rd entries per the results template. The entries would be nicely varied and user generated. Some photo challenge entries will also be FPs, so they could be eliminated from that set.
QI may be worthy but it doesn't generate "Wow!" images and so for that reason I don't think it is suitable for including in a popularity contest where "Wow!" is likely the main judging criteria. It would also be difficult to restrict the number judged. Many users nominate their images for QI and FP so there's already a way to select the best of QI: those are FPs. -- Colin (talk) 15:02, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm not understanding why we shouldn't restrict this to FPs. The best of the Photo Challenge images should be nominated at FPC, as seems to be happening to at least some extent. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:59, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm aware that Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Odin and Thor, Ravens, Tower of London 2016-04-30a.jpg, which won Commons:Picture of the Year/2016, only just scraped through FPC, with technical complaints that wouldn't have been a factor at photo challenge and it seemed were not a concern at POTY. I see some PC images get FP but not sure it is so many of the best that it isn't worth considering further. -- Colin (talk) 11:12, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @Rhododendrites for kicking off this thread and pinging folks! The 20th anniversary of Commons is Sept. 7, 2024 and I would like to be able to run some kind of "Best of Commons" photo contest that is more than just a "super POTY" (i.e. we shouldn't just be rehashing the same POTY contests). I would like to start the 2023 POTY in mid-January (more on that soon) so we then have time during the year to run this contest and announce the winner(s) before/on September.
Some ideas so far: divide photos by geographic region, or by decade. Or best photo taken by a Commons user. Legoktm (talk) 05:15, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure our tagging of images is reliable enough to determine which FPs were taken by a Commons user without going through each one individually in person. Only some people apply personal categories. Geographic region would possibly overload certain areas such as USA or Germany.
A different approach (either combined with a contest or not) could be to ask some people to nominate their favourite image on Commons (not their own) and explain why it is great. Or for photographers to nominate their favourite own image and explain why it is special to them. It would likely require a degree of editing and subjective selecting that isn't how we traditionally operate, but if people could accept that, it might generate an interesting work. -- Colin (talk) 11:19, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I love this idea. Legoktm (talk) 16:52, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, Rhododendrites and Legoktm, for your initiative! It’s a great idea and in any case we should so something like this. We have already very good ideas in this discussion – I especially like Colin’s idea that people could nominate their favourite photos on Commons. The problem is, how do we select the people who can nominate here? – Just as a worst-case scenario: If we can’t find a good and easy to implement solution, I would suggest to make a “all-time POTY” round, like POTY, but just with the finalists (not only the winners!) of all POTY years. This would be rather boring, I know, but I hope it would be rather easy to implement this. Therefore I propose this just in case we cannot find a more thrilling, but still practicable solution. My 50 cent, --Aristeas (talk) 13:27, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Honestly, every Commons photo contest explicitly refuses restorations from consideration, and while they're technically included in POTY, there's absolutely no celebration of anything but the overall winners of POTY, not the winners of categories (where restorations are generally lumped with paintings downloaded from museums unchanged anyway, and the paintings inevitably win)...
There has never been any attempt at Commons to celebrate diversity of work beyond photography, and (maybe like 10 years ago) illustration. So have another celebration of the photographers' club, but, if you do, don't act like it's the big celebration of everything Commons. It's not even attempting to get the diversity of photographs out there. It's heavily biased towards dramatic action shots that look good at thumbnail, the major exceptions being major news events (Pluto/New Horizons, burning of Notre Dame, COVID).
